What are muscle-relaxing injecions?

It is a natural protein that is derived from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum, and has undergone a safe and rigorous purification process. How does it work?

Are there any side effects or complications?

Theoretically, some people may face an allergy to anti-wrinkle injections, but this is incredibly rare. Very rare complications can include ptosis (droopy eyes caused by toxin migrating from an upper eyelid injection to the elevator muscles), photosensitivity and dry eyes. A very small percentage of clients will develop antibodies to the botulinum that may cause the treatment to become ineffective, but if this is the case you can always attempt the procedure again in the future, or your practitioner may recommend for you an alternative.

Contraindications

You should avoid getting anti-wrinkle injections if you are experiencing any of the following:

1. Pregnancy and/or lactation.
2. Current or recent treatment with a certain class of rarely prescribed antibiotics, known as the amino glycosides.
3. Any current or recent infection in the vicinity of the injection site
4. Blood clotting disorders, or current therapy with drugs that can inhibit blood clotting, e.g. Warfarin.
5. Any diseases that affects the muscles, particularly myasthenia gravis.
6. Allergy to tetanus toxoid is a potential problem, but it is not an absolute contraindication. More information is available at your consultation appointment.

Prior to your treatment

You should not drink any alcohol or take aspirin in the twenty four hours before your treatment. Ensure that you inform your practitioner of any history of bronchitis, pneumonia and /or problems with breathing.

After treatment care

It is advised that you do not touch the recently treated area for approximately three to four hours, and remain upright during this time. It is best to avoid facial massage or any electrical stimulation to your face for at least seven days and avoid alcohol for the following twelve hours. Do not overstretch, kneel or bend excessively during the two days following your treatment, and do not fly for seventy two hours. Strenuous exercise, hot baths, showers or saunas should be avoided too. Keeping your facial muscles active after the procedure will help the treatment to take effect.
